Where your money goes

YOUR IMPACT

CONSERVING OUR ENVIRONMENT

Stay a few days at this off-grid eco resort in Bocas del Toro and you can see where your money goes. The whole island runs on solar. There is no road in. You arrive by water.

95% of what you eat comes off the 5-acre garden Roque tends. The cacao and nutmeg we buy, paid, from his mother's Ngäbe co-op on the mainland.

A pod of bottlenose dolphins lives in the bay out front year-round, and marine biologists we work with keep track of them. Your stay funds that work.

The island

OFF-GRID INFRASTRUCTURE

SOLAR SYSTEM
10kWSolar Capacity

SOLAR SYSTEM

The whole island runs on solar panels and batteries, day and night. The generator is backup only. That is why the nights get properly dark and there is no engine hum.

  • Advanced battery storage for 24/7 reliable power supply
  • 100% renewable with zero carbon emissions from energy
WATER SYSTEMS
15,000LWater Storage Capacity

WATER SYSTEMS

We catch the rain, run it through reverse osmosis and UV, and that is all the water you drink and use. What reaches your glass fell from the sky here.

  • Multi-stage purification for clean drinking water
  • Greywater recycling for gardens and landscaping

SUSTAINABLE FOOD CYCLE

FARM-TO-TABLE
95%Locally Sourced Produce

FARM-TO-TABLE

The 5-acre tropical garden Roque tends gives you 95% of what is on your plate. The rest we buy from Ngäbe-Buglé farmers and the local fishers: the snapper on the menu came in by panga that morning.

What We Grow On Site:

Tomatoes, cucumber, peppers, eggplant, chili, herbs, katuk, pumpkin, zucchini, ginger, turmeric, vanilla, seasonal kale, limes, coconuts, cacao, mangosteen, mango, pineapple, multiple banana varieties, rambutan, mandarins, star fruit, papaya, yuca, potatoes, and more.

A closed loop

100% Waste Composted

COMPOSTING & WASTE REDUCTION

Kitchen scraps get composted and go back to the garden. The peel from last night's dinner feeds next week's tomatoes.

  • 100% food waste composting
  • Zero single-use plastics

REUSABLE MATERIALS

Refillable dispensers, metal silverware, reusable straws. We do not bring single-use plastic onto the island.

NGÄBE-BUGLÉ COLLABORATION

Roque's mother's Ngäbe co-op sells us the cacao and nutmeg, and we pay them for it. The women weave the kra bags we sell here, and we bring them coconuts from the garden for their oil. 60% of our staff are local.

  • Direct cacao and nutmeg sourcing
  • Community-led cultural workshops
  • Local employment with 60% of staff from Ngäbe-Buglé communities
HEALTHCARE & SUPPORT

HEALTHCARE & SUPPORT

We work with Floating Doctors, who bring medical care to indigenous communities around here that have none nearby. Some guests stay with us and head out to volunteer alongside them.

DONATIONS NEEDED

Clothing, books, school supplies, solar chargers, mosquito nets, water treatment systems, life vests, and sports equipment.

EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIPS

We put staff and their kids through training in healthcare or hospitality. Want to sponsor a student? Write to us and we will tell you how.

BIODIVERSITY PROTECTION

DOLPHIN MONITORING

DOLPHIN MONITORING

Marine biologists track the resident bottlenose dolphin pod that lives in the bay. We watch without crowding the boat in or chasing them: if they want to leave, they leave.

REFORESTATION & HABITAT PROTECTION

We leave the primary rainforest on the property standing and link it into corridors so animals can move through. That is why you hear monkeys in the canopy and spot sloths from the trails Roque cut.

NATURAL PEST CONTROL

We use essential oils for pest control and recommend repellent, closed windows at dusk, and the mosquito nets provided in each room.
